Those resources are often food for universal constructors like people to be able to operate and do knowledge creation. In the current state of human development, these resources are tied to a value symbol we call money. Thus, all knowledge creation can be measured in units of time which correlate with units of money. We can achieve more knowledge creation if we input more time or money (assuming that people want to do knowledge creation activates). More knowledge creation leads to faster progress and ultimately can lead us to the future we are reading about in many sci-fi stories.
