Technological innovation often happens when one domain is re-domenized using ideas (principles), technologies, or newly discovered phenomena from other domains. This is why true breakthroughs are rarely made when staying strictly within a single field/domain.
Novel ideas emerge when you step outside your own domain and look at what can be applied from other technological domains. Very often, innovation happens at this intersection of domains.
Sometimes, out of this process entirely new domains are born.
This certainly happened in my own case when I combined different domains to build Dexter (The Human Touch Robotics). I was an expert in one domain, but deeply curious and engaged in others.
Innovation thrives at the intersection of domains that seem incompatible..
