Building a startup sometimes feels like The Lord of the Rings.
I was lucky enough to read The Lord of the Rings when I was very young, before the movies came out. And the story stayed with me. Because when you look at it from a different perspective, it is much more than a story about wizards, hobbits, elves, dwarves, and one powerful ring. It is a much deeper story about courage, friendship, loyalty, sacrifice, temptation, resilience, and the long journey toward something that seems almost impossible.
In many ways this resemble a story of building a startup company (an why we also have in our office a painting depicting fellowhisp). Not because startups are fantasy stories. But because building a startup also means taking on a mission that is uncertain, difficult, and much bigger than what any one person can carry alone.
In The Lord of the Rings, the journey to Mordor is not successful because one hero has all the answers. It is successful because of the joint efforts of the Fellowship, where each members has its on part to play. And in many ways, that is also what building a startup is about.
You need different people with different strengths. You need the vision and wisdom of Gandalf. The courage and leadership of Aragorn. The technical skill and execution of Legolas and Gimli. And many times you need the loyalty and quiet strength of Sam.
In a startup, the plan will change many times. The original roadmap will break. The team will need to adapt. Resources will be limited. Some days will feel like real progress. Some days will feel like walking through Mordor.
But the mission must remain strong enough to keep people moving.
One of the lessons is: You can have great technology, a strong strategy, and a big market opportunity. But without the right people around you, the journey becomes very difficult, and often almost impossible.
Startups are not built by individual heroics alone. They are built by teams that trust each other, challenge each other, and keep going when things get difficult.
Because in the end, every startup needs a Fellowship.
